Our view of the service

North Devon Hospice at Deer Park in Barnstaple provides an 7-bed in-patient unit, a team of community nurse specialists (CNS), a range of day services and support groups and a hospice to home team. Hospice services were provided for adults over the age of 18, with life-limiting illnesses and advanced progressive conditions. We conducted an evidence- based, desktop assessment of the Devon service from 7 December to 8 February 2024 which included an on-site visit on 14 December 2023. We reviewed safe, effective, responsive and well-led key questions. The overall rating for this service is good. We rated safe as good overall with elements of the care environment being outstanding due to the newly renovated in-patient facility which was designed listening to staff and patient feedback. The areas we assessed under effective were rated good because the service met both clinical expectations and the expectations of the people that used its services. The areas we assessed under responsive were rated good because the service was joined up and flexible and supported choice and continuity. The areas assessed under well led were good, however elements were outstanding. For example, the service had developed governance systems which allowed it to plan for its future in a way that ensured it was flexible and innovative and ensured good quality, sustainable care, treatment and support.

People's experience of this service

We were provided with information managers collected from patients about their experiences of care. The majority of the feedback was positive, for example in October 2023, the service received 13 responses to its survey and 11 patients stated they had received very good care across the board. We talked with 2 patients and 2 family members . They all reported they were happy with the care they received and considered the service to be good.
