Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

Families felt their needs and wishes were always met and if they required anything the team were quick to respond. Relatives told us people were treated with compassion and respected their choice and dignity.

Staff understood the importance of involving parents and carers in getting the right balance for the young person. Staff described a range of tools they used with young people to enable communication. This would either be a tool the young person would use or a system that enabled staff to translate documents instantly to share with families. This helped families and children to understand their care and treatment choices. Staff had access to support from the learning disability team who also provided training on communication equipment.

Staff were provided with a variety of wellbeing and support services through internal processes. Staff told us they felt confident in having open and honest conversations with their line managers and this was echoed across a variety of roles and at all levels within the service. Staff told us they felt valued and respected by their managers. They felt their workload was manageable and were confident their concerns around this would be taken seriously by their manager if it became unmanageable.

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and enabled staff to deliver person-centred care. This was achieved through received regular supervision and 1 to 1 meetings where there was an opportunity to feedback concerns about the service or their own well-being. Staff were supported through career conversations to discuss development needs. Handbooks were available for staff which included all relevant information around rest periods, well-being and annual leave as well as an employee assist programme for additional support.
