During a routine inspection

There were 16 patients on Chance ward and 14 patients on Salter ward on the day of our inspection. Some patients were unable to tell us their experiences of being at the hospital due to their communication needs so we spent time observing how staff interacted with them. We spoke with nine patients, seven of their relatives and 17 members of staff. We discussed our findings with the managers at the end of our inspection.

We saw that patients' capacity to make decisions about their care and welfare was assessed to ensure that all decisions were made in their best interests.

Staff had most of the information they needed to know how to support patients to meet their individual needs. A relative told us, 'The care is very good here and we are kept informed about our relatives care and treatment. Staff ask our opinion too.'

Patients told us that they felt safe at the hospital. We saw that systems were in place to protect patients from abuse and harm.

There were sufficient staff who had the appropriate skills and knowledge to ensure that patients' needs were met. A patient told us, 'All the staff are wonderful here, I see the doctor weekly and in between if I need to.'

Patients and their relatives were asked for their views about the service provided and we saw that these were listened to.
