During an inspection looking at part of the service

We talked with two people who used the service and one relative who was visiting their parent. The people who used the service told us they were happy with the care they received, liked the staff who looked after them and enjoyed their food. The relative felt they had been kept well informed and their parent always appeared clean and well cared for when they visited. One person who used the service said, “been great here, I have made friends…we all get on and have a lot of laughs”.

During our follow up inspection we found the location had ensured effective processes had been introduced to ensure people’s capacity to make decisions had been adequately assessed regarding their consent to care and treatment.

We found people were protected from the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care and treatment because accurate and appropriate records had been maintained. The provider had introduced a system of audit to ensure care records had been fully completed and our review of care records identified no gaps in the completion of these records.

During a routine inspection

People told us that they were happy with the care they received. One person told us "they [the staff] know how to help me” and another said “it’s all smashing.” We observed that when staff interacted with people and carried out care tasks they did this in a supportive and warm manner, and took time to understand people’s preferences.

In some of the files we checked the provider had no evidence that each person’s ability to consent to their care had been assessed. Six out of the nine files we checked contained documentation in relation to care which was incomplete. This meant that the provider did not hold accurate or appropriate information about the care and treatment provided to each person who was using the service.

We checked the premises and saw that the building and décor were mostly in a good state of repair and appropriately maintained. We looked at two bedrooms and saw that they had been decorated in a bright and homely style.

Appropriate checks had been undertaken before staff began work, including identity checks, taking up references and carrying out Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.

People told us they thought they were well cared for, the home was clean, enjoyed the food they received and generally liked the staff that cared for them. 'Can't grumble about the food and you can get a drink more or less when you want';
