During an assessment under our new approach
The West End Donor Centre is part of NHS Blood and Transplant, a special health authority, sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Care. It manages the national supply of blood, organs, tissues, and stem cells. It serves as the official organ donation organisation for the UK and supports hospitals with blood and transplant services. It is registered by CQC to provide the following regulated activities: Management of Supply of Blood and Blood Derived Products and Treatment of Disease, Disorder or Injury. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are also regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to regulate the manufacture of medicinal products for example, medicinal blood components like albumin and platelets.
The West End Donor Centre collects blood and platelets, and enables autologous self-donors to collect blood for their own future use. The service is located in the heart of the west end of London. It is organised into 2 clinics; on the ground floor and first floor. Both are open 7 days a week.
This was the first inspection of the West End Donor Centre and was unannounced. We inspected the service to understand processes in place to manage quality and safety. This inspection focused on key areas in the safe, effective, caring and well led domains. Our inspection team consisted of 2 inspectors. We spoke with 15 members of staff including donor-carers, nurses, managers and senior managers. We reviewed documentation on site and requested further documentation following our visit. We did not rate the West End Donor Centre because CQC does not have the duty to rate NHS Blood and Transplant or any of its services.
