During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who use the service and looked at the 2012 Resident and Relative Satisfaction Survey Results report. People were satisfied with the quality of care provided at Athlone House Nursing Home. One person told us that they were "very happy". People confirmed that they knew how to make a complaint.

There was a consent policy in place and staff confirmed that they had received training in the Mental Capacity Act (2005). People were asked for their permission before staff delivered any care. We saw that care plans and risk assessments were updated monthly and either the person using the service or their relative signed the care plan to show that they consented to it.

Care was delivered in a way to ensure a person's safety and welfare. There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies. There were enough staff to meet people's needs and there were arrangements in place to manage any staff shortages.

During the inspection we observed an activity session for 30 minutes. We observed mainly positive and neutral interactions between staff and people who use the service. Staff spoke to people using the service in a kind and gentle manner and supported them to do what they wanted. People who use the service were positive about the activities provided. One person told us "we do have a lot of fun".

There were systems in place to reduce the risk of infection. At the time of the inspection the service was observed to be clean.
