During an inspection looking at part of the service

People told us they were involved in decisions and discussions about their care and treatment. They were satisfied with the care and treatment they received and the ward environment where they were accommodated.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people individually, and others around the ward. Our observations and discussions showed that people are treated with respect and are involved as far as possible in decisions made about their care and treatment. People confirmed that they were provided with helpful information on admission and their confidentiality was respected. People understood their rights, even though they did not always feel these were upheld. They told us it was difficult to find any privacy. People confirmed they were able to access advocacy services and saw their doctor regularly. They told us that delays in obtaining medical treatment for physical conditions were sometimes a problem. People said they appreciated being able to access the day hospital for activities.

People expressed mixed views about the food, but said there was always enough and they were able to choose what they would like each day. They appreciated being able to make drinks whenever they wanted to.

People told us they did not always feel safe on the ward and they had experienced verbal and physical abuse from other patients. People told us the ward was always clean and there were always enough staff ' although they were very busy, they respond quickly when needed. Staff were helpful, understanding and knowledgeable about their illness, and they were able to advise when needed.
