Equity in access

Patients could access the service Monday to Friday, from 08.30 to 16.30 via a referral from the police or social services. All appointments were pre-planned, this enabled staff to work flexibly with patients before they attended, this included answering any questions by phone, text or in person by arranging a pre-assessment visit. An information leaflet was available to share with patients; this was suitable for younger children. The SARC saw all children up to the age of 18.

The Trust’s website provided information about what the SARC provided, with staff names that patients might meet and links to support services for patients. Some information leaflets were available at the SARC regarding community-based support services.

The service had established relationships with the police and local authorities; however, staff were sighted on the need to promote it more widely. There was an appetite from staff to proactively engage with local schools, underrepresented groups (boys), and non-English speaking groups to raise the profile of the service. Following a quality visit by NHSE focussing on male survivors, the service amended its feedback form and have developed an action plan to focus on male experience, advertising, and engagement. The team won the Trust Golden Star Award in September 2024 for Excellence in Partnership Working.

There was dedicated parking close to the building for patients’ responsible adult or police to use. There SARC building was accessible via a ramp, and arrangements could be made if a hoist was required. Staff had access to translation services for patients who did not speak or understand English, and staff had access to British Sign Language via online services. The manager adjusted the times when the cleaner attended the SARC, this ensured patients with neurodevelopmental needs were not overwhelmed and the timings and sequencing of the appointment could go ahead without interruption.

Staff completed regular training on equality and diversity and records we viewed showed that patients were asked about their sexuality, disability, and religious needs so that staff could take these into account in the delivery of care.

There was a small supply of children’s toys and fidget toys, children’s quilt covers and dressing gowns to try and make the experience as child friendly as possible. A ceiling tile over the examination couch had been replaced with a child appropriate picture scene, again to provide distraction during examinations. Patients could request their gender preference of the doctor undertaking their examination.

The service had not received any complaints within the 12 months prior to this inspection.
