All Inspections

During a routine inspection

We used the findings of a survey of 155 of the young people carried out the week prior to the inspection by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons and we met with a group of six young people, and two young people individually. We met a selection of staff; the prison governor, Head of Health Care, Head of Primary health care, a Clinical Team leader, nurses, psychiatrists, a psychologist, dentist, gym staff and unit officers. We observed two nurses when they were interacting with young people in the health care unit.

The survey found only 32% of young people thought the quality of health care in the prison was good or very good. The national comparator was 66%. This meant that young people at Feltham were much less satisfied with the quality of health care than young people at most other young offender institutions in this country.

During a routine inspection

Young people told us that they understand the care, treatment and support choices available to them and that they feel safe on the healthcare units. They said that the care and treatment that they received was good and they were allowed to manage their long-term medical conditions as they would at home. Young people said that they are able to choose their meals from a menu and they received their medicines on time.

Staff were praised by young people for being caring, easy to talk to, always there to listen, readily available to help and excellent at their job.
