During an inspection looking at part of the service

This review of compliance report is a summary of the reviews of both the Cavell Centre and Fulbourn Hospital during which we spoke with/observed a minimum of 29 patients and two of the patients' families.

What people told us can be found in more detail in the review of compliance reports for these two hospital sites.

Most people we spoke with told us they had a good relationship with the trust's staff and staff treated them with respect. One person commented, 'They have time for me and listen to me. They are approachable and knowledgeable'. Another person told us, 'They (staff) never seem shocked by what I tell them'. One person was particularly appreciative that staff had gone out of their way to help him sort out his abandoned car, removing anxiety that was not helping him to recover from his mental health issues. Two people told us that their mental health had improved as a result of their stay on the unit and one of them was looking forward to their discharge. Another person told us that community meetings held on the ward were good and commented that, 'What you say is considered, nothing is ignored'. The relatives of a person on Denbigh ward spoke highly of the staff who looked after their family member, telling us, 'There's always plenty of staff around and they are very caring'.

However people raised concerns that there were not enough activities on the wards at week-ends and that important decisions about their care and discharge plans had not been discussed or explained to them in a way they understood. One person, whose psychiatrist had suggested a community treatment order as part of her discharge planning stated, 'This is the first I've heard of it. I don't even know what it is or what it means'. Another person who had just been admitted to a psychiatric ward for the first time told us she had not been able to talk to any member of staff to explain to her what was happening, making her feel anxious and distressed. She told us, 'No one has talked to me today - I don't know what is happening or what to do'.
