23 May and 5 June 2013

During a routine inspection

We inspected the hospital on 23 May and 5 June 2013. The hospital did not know that we would be visiting.

On each occasion we spent time in the units to observe the activity and interactions between staff and patients. We saw that staff were supportive, caring and professional. One patient told us: "The staff are all very kind, but they are very busy at times".

Another patient told us: "I feel that I can speak with staff about any problems I might have and they will help me, they always listen to my point of view".

We looked at the care and support records of 10 people who were accommodated in different units within the hospital. We spoke with staff and they told us how they provided care for people each day. Four patients told us they were fully involved in the planning of their care. One patient told us: "My key worker is really good and my care plan includes the things I like to do".

Staff told us that patients were always consulted with regard to any treatments that may be necessary and whenever possible consent for the treatment was obtained.

We saw systems were in place to protect people from abuse and people were given medicines based on their current healthcare needs.

Staff told us that there were sufficient staff on duty to meet the needs of patients. Patients told us the staff were very kind and helpful.

We saw the hospital had an effective system for monitoring the quality of the service.
