Our view of the service

On the 16 and 17 of September 2025 we carried out an inspection of surgical services at Salisbury District Hospital, which we have rated as requires improvement.

The reason for the inspection was due to the aged rating of the service, having previously been inspected in 2018 and rated as good.

We inspected 33 quality statements across the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions.

The surgical service has 16 operating theatres, split across main and day surgery theatres. There were five surgical wards with approximately 80 beds.

We spoke with more than 25 patients, including some of their carers or relatives. We reviewed 36 patient records including nursing notes, prescription charts and theatre records. We spoke with more than 50 staff which included: consultants, surgeons, operating department practitioners, resident doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, allied health professionals, senior leaders, administration staff, housekeeping staff and volunteers.

At this inspection we found breaches of regulation in relation to Safe Care and Treatment and Good Governance.

People's experience of this service

Patients, their family members and carers were all positive about the staff treating them with kindness, dignity and providing them with effective care and treatment. Patients said that communication was good and that they felt included in their care. Patients told us they did not experience discrimination or inequality when accessing the service. The surgical service made reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities and communication difficulties.
