During an inspection looking at part of the service

We received positive feedback from the patients and relatives we spoke to at the hospital. Patients on the care of the elderly ward, Wellington, were particularly complementary about the nursing staff. Patients and relatives on Phyllis Friend ward, a mixed specialities ward, praised staff for the way they involved them, and took time to explain the details of their care and treatment.

On both wards we found that when people were not able to give consent to treatment, appropriate assessments were not properly recorded.

We also found that for some patients on Wellington ward, assistance during mealtimes needed to be improved.

On Wellington Ward we also saw that people did not always have access to their call bells when they have used them and that equipment to prevent pressure sores was not always provided in a timely manner.

During a routine inspection

Most people we spoke to who used the services at the Royal London Hospital told us that they received a good level of care, treatment and support. People were very complimentary about the staff members and said that they explained and answered questions about their care and treatment whenever they needed it. Very few people we spoke to had complaints about the service they had received and people told us that they knew about the complaints and comments process. However our observations of care and our discussions with members of staff did identify areas for improvement in the services provided.
