During a routine inspection

The service cares for and supports patients with a wide range of complex needs. They were not all able to verbally tell us their experiences. We therefore used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of patients who used the service, including observing the care being delivered, talking with staff and looking at records in the home.

We spoke with five patients who used the service and/or their relative. Patients told us they were happy with the care provided and were involved with their care and support needs. Comments we received included:

'The staff understand me.'

'I've found the service lovely.'

All of the patients we spoke with thought they had enough to do and said they were not bored. They spoke of a variety of activities they were involved in; this included a number of community based activities.

Patients spoke highly of the staff and said they got on well with them. Most patients we spoke with said there were enough staff to meet their needs but they thought there should be more staff to enable them to get out more. Other comments included:

'They are all alright here.'

'They've been marvellous with him.'

We spoke with five staff, including the Unit Manager and Service Manager. Staff said they had enough staff to meet patient's needs properly. They said they did not feel rushed and had enough time to make sure patients got what they needed. They did however say that they did not always have enough staff to fulfil everyone's wishes with regards to activity outside of the home.

We saw that patients who used the service were responded to promptly when they asked for any support or assistance

There were some quality monitoring programmes in place, which included patients giving feedback about their care and support.
