During a routine inspection

During our visit we saw staff interacting with patients in a positive, respectful and caring manner. Staff we spoke with had a good understanding of how they could protect patients rights and were knowledgeable about the correct use of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 and Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983.

We spoke with four patients. They all told us they had given their consent to treatment and had signed their care plans. Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

Patients we spoke with told us they thought they were cared for well by staff and felt safe on the ward. They stated that staff showed them respect and overall they felt listened to by staff. We did however; find some inconsistencies in the recording of information in some care records we looked at.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet patients needs.

We found the building was not compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act or Department of Health (DoH) Single Sex Accommodation (SSA) requirements which could compromise the privacy and dignity of patients.

The ward had several ligature points. There was no risk assessment in place to manage these risks. This meant patients were not protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

The provider did not have an effective system in place to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people who used the service and others.
