Our view of the service

Date of assessment 4 June to 10 June 2025. We conducted an off-site assessment of specific parts of urgent and emergency care services at the adult emergency department of UHBW Bristol Campus (also known as Bristol Royal Infirmary). This assessment was to follow up on actions the service had taken after we identified breaches of 2 legal regulations at our last assessment in June 2024. These were regarding not enough medical staff to meet demand at weekends and not enough trained fire wardens in the department.

We found the service had made improvements in both areas. There were more senior medical staff at weekends and additional fire wardens had been trained. The service was no longer in breach of legal regulations.

People's experience of this service

Our previous assessment in June 2024 found most people using the service were positive about the care and treatment they received from staff, despite some long waits they had experienced. The increase in consultant staffing would help to reduce the time patients waited to be seen. This was being monitored by managers.
