All Inspections

6 August 2013

During a routine inspection

Baytree House provided a respite or short stay service for people with learning and some physical disabilities. People may stay there from one night a week on a regular basis to a short stay while their family or carers had a break. On the day we visited there were 7 people staying overnight.

We saw that people were well cared for. People had opportunities to make choices and to take part in activities they enjoyed. While we were at the service we saw staff communicated with people effectively and involved them in making decisions about their care. We saw that families and people themselves had been involved in writing and updating care plans and information about people's needs. We saw from records that people's physical health care needs were met by staff in a way that was safe and effective.

We saw information was available about the service. People who used the service and their families were encouraged to be involved in making suggestions for improvements. Where people lacked the capacity to make decisions for themselves we saw that their rights were protected and an appropriate process was in place to make decisions in people's best interests.

We saw there were enough staff to support people. Records were well maintained and kept securely.

8 August 2012

During a routine inspection

We (the Care Quality Commission) visited Baytree House unannounced on the 8th August 2012.

Baytree House provides a respite care facility for people with learning disabilities. On the day that we visited there were three people using the service, all of whom attended there regularly for short stays. One of these people had significant communication difficulties, and the other people who were there did not wish to speak to us about their experience of using the service. However we spent some time observing care or interactions between staff and the people using the service. We also looked at the records that supported peoples care and spoke to staff about people's needs and how staff supported them.

Since the last inspection in 2010, other changes within the services provided by Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust, had meant that Baytree House was taking more people with profound and multiple learning disabilities or challenging behaviours for short stay care. Further changes may take place in future to reduce the number of beds and further adapt the building to better meet the needs of people with more severe difficulties and complex care needs.

We found the service was consulting with people using the service about how to develop the service further and about the standards of care provided to people.
