During an inspection in response to concerns

During CQC's responsive review of St Mary's Nursing Centre, Luton, we spoke with individual's being cared for by the home's staff and staff from the Community Assessment and Rehabilitation Team (CART). The residents on the rehabilitation unit were cared for by staff from both the care home and the CART team. Some of the people that we spoke with were able to distinguish between those staff who were providing their care needs as part of their accommodation and those staff who supported their rehabilitation needs. However, in the main, individuals referred to anyone providing their care as 'staff'.

Two residents on the rehabilitation unit told us that they were always treated well by staff, given choices and encouraged to make decisions about their care. One resident told us about the plan for her to make a visit to her home prior to her eventual discharge; she told us, 'They have to make sure I can get in and out of bed and do some simple tasks.' However, other people were unsure about the plans for their rehabilitation and were not aware if any goals had been set for them.

An internal audit of people following discharge to home from the rehabilitation unit showed that 98% of the people who had used the service were satisfied with the care they had received. However, CQC were aware that this audit did not include people who for some reason had not returned home.
