Treating people as individuals
We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.
Independence, choice and control
The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always knowtheir rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. We received feedback that there was a need for more structured, inclusive, and stimulating activities. For example, one relative shared that teaching life-skills could enhance a person’s autonomy. We observed minimal activities or opportunities for pursuing interests and hobbies for people who relied on staff support to do so. Records showed that activities were offered but sometimes refused. However, we could not see what activities had been offered, and if these were reflective of people’s interests and skills. Not all care records included people’s long-term aspirations and goals.
On the other hand, for those that were independently able, daily living skills such as cleaning and cooking were promoted, and access to the community was supported. Staff understood how to tailor the level of their support. One staff told us, “Some people here are independent, and do their own thing, others can refuse to do things they can, so it is about encouraging them to say come on I know you can do this.”
Some relative feedback confirmed some in-house activities such as colouring, and birthday parties did take place showing that people were valued and celebrated.
