Background to this inspection

Updated 18 December 2020

We carried out this inspection under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. This inspection was planned to check whether the provider is meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

This was a targeted inspection looking at the infection control and prevention (IPC) measures the provider has in place. As part of CQC’s response to the coronavirus pandemic we are conducting a review of IPC measures in care homes.

The service had been identified for use by the Local Authority as a designated care setting in response to the Winter Plan for people discharged from hospital with a positive Covid-19 status. This inspection was to ensure that the service was compliant with IPC measures.

This inspection took place on 4 December 2020 and was announced.

Overall inspection

Updated 18 December 2020

The Beach House is a newly registered care home which will provide short term residential care to a maximum of 11 people who have been discharged from hospital with a positive Covid-19 status. There was no one living there at the time of our inspection but the service was ready to support people and we found the following examples of good practice.

• Staff had completed training about COVID-19 and how to prevent the spread of the virus.

• The provider was working closely with partner organisations to ensure people would be admitted and discharged from the service safely and appropriately.

• Communication aids were available to help people with hearing difficulties to understand what staff wearing face masks were saying to them.

• Bedrooms had their own tablet computers and support was available to use these. This was to enable regular contact with friends and family as well as providing other activities.

• The provider had supplied staff with bicycles to reduce the need to use public transport.

We were assured that this service met good infection prevention and control guidelines as a designated care setting.
