66 Hookstone Chase Harrogate

Date of assessment: 6 to 20 January 2026. 66 Hookstone Chase is a care home for autistic people and people with a learning disability. This inspection was prompted due to the length of time since our last inspection. Five people were living at the service at the time of our inspection. We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

Staff deployment reflected people’s individual support needs. Recruitment checks were thorough, and staff received regular training, supervision and appraisals. Safeguarding systems were robust; staff were trained and confident in their responsibilities. Medicines were managed safely. The environment was clean, well maintained and adapted to people’s needs.

Care records reflected people’s strengths, aspirations and communication needs, and people were involved in decisions about their care. Risk assessments and care plans were detailed, person‑centred and regularly reviewed. Staff worked collaboratively with professionals and families to provide joined-up care. Staff understood the principles of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA).

Staff and managers shared clear values and demonstrated commitment to person-centred, high‑quality care. Leadership was visible and supportive, and staff told us they felt valued and well supported. The provider had effective systems for safety, governance and continuous improvement. Governance systems were effective, including regular audits, action plans and oversight from senior managers. People, relatives, and staff consistently spoke positively about improvements since our last inspection.

The provider was previously in breach of the legal regulations in relation to staffing. Improvements were found at this assessment, and the provider was no longer in breach of this regulation.

People told us they felt safe, well cared for and supported by staff who were kind, respectful and attentive. People said of the staff, “They are all very nice. I have everything I want” and "They're always kind and caring...absolutely.” Observations during the inspection showed calm, reassuring and person-centred interactions, with staff demonstrating detailed knowledge of people’s needs, preferences and communication styles.

People had choice and control over their daily routines, meals and activities, and staff worked flexibly to accommodate individual preferences and promote independence. Care was individualised and tailored to people’s needs and interests. Relatives spoke positively about the care and support provided, reporting good communication and a sense of trust in the staff team. Staff promoted inclusion and equality, with reasonable adjustments made for sensory, communication and accessibility needs.

People felt listened to and valued, and staff ensured that their views and preferences shaped the support they received. People experienced a service that prioritised safety, respect and personalised care, helping them feel secure, included and supported in their daily lives. Relatives said, “There are no concerns with Hookstone, there is a lot of affection from the staff...and yes [person] is settled and content” and "The communication is very good between us, they are absolutely fantastic... we make a very good team.”

Relatives spoke positively about the leadership team, recent improvements and the way the home was run and organised. They said, "Yes, [the manager] is good and although she's busy she always finds time to get back to me” and "It's a unit (the home) that's run very well...it works well."
