Date of Assessment: 23 April to 16 May 2025. This was a comprehensive assessment of all 5 key questions triggered by our ongoing monitoring of the service. The service is an extra care service providing support to 32 older people living in their own homes within a large purpose-built shared building. Not everyone who used the service were receiving a regulated activity. Those that were had the regulated activity of personal care. Personal care is help with tasks related to personal hygiene and eating. The inspection was prompted in part by notification of an incident following which a person using the service died. This incident is subject to further investigation by CQC as to whether any regulatory action should be taken. As a result, this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident.
However, the information shared with CQC about the incident indicated potential concerns about the management of fire risk. This inspection examined those risks.
The registered manager had a good understanding and knowledge of the service. They had recognised areas where improvements were needed around the quality and safety of the service. Where actions had been identified, the registered manager was taking steps to reduce the most significant risks. This included improving some care plan and risk management information. The registered manager promoted a positive learning culture at the service. Learning was taken from a fire related incident and the provider was working at ensuring all staff were confident when responding to fire risks.
People gave us positive feedback about the staff and management at the service. The registered manager and senior staff had made a concerted effort to create a sense of community at the service, which had a positive impact on people’s wellbeing. People were cared for by a consistent team of staff, who had a good understanding of their needs. Staff had received training relevant to their role and spoke positively about the ongoing support they received from senior staff. The provider had worked effectively with stakeholders to meet people’s needs. In particular, they had made very positive links with a local hospice in order to provider responsive end of life care support where required.
