Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 21 January 2026

We visited the service on 12 and 19 February 2026. This assessment took place in response to a recent safeguarding concern, and the length of time since our last inspection. We did not find any safeguarding concerns during our inspection.

1 Fengates Road is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to 6 people. At the time of our inspection, there were 5 people living there.

We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence, and good access to community facilities. We found people received care and support in accordance with its principles.

At our last inspection in April 2022, we rated the service good in all key questions and overall.

People received their medicines safely and as prescribed, and staff received training in medicines management. Processes to help ensure that risks to people were assessed and mitigated were effective. People were supported to take risks in a positive way to promote and maintain their independence. Staffing levels were overall adequate to meet people’s needs and staff retention was good.

There were good systems to protect people from the risk of infection and cross contamination, and staff followed good practice. There were systems in place for the safe recruitment of staff. Overall, people were cared for by staff who were kind and caring and knew them well. The service was clean, fresh and well-maintained.

People were supported to undertake a wide range of activities of their choice and were involved in the planning of these. People and their relatives were involved in their pre-admission assessment, care planning and the management of individual risks. Staff received regular training and had their competencies checked. People’s end of life wishes had been considered and documented. Staff spoke favourably of the management team and felt listened to and consulted.

People's experience of the service

Updated 21 January 2026

People said they felt safe, staff were kind and there were enough to meet their needs. One person told us, “I always feel safe” and another stated, “I agree, it is always safe here.” All the relatives we spoke with gave positive feedback about the staff and management. One relative told us, “[Family member] is very happy there, well cared for and all [their] needs are met.” People and relatives were involved and included in their care and support. People were supported to access healthcare services and there was evidence to suggest there was consistent communication with healthcare professionals.

We observed positive interactions between staff and the people they supported. This included communicating in people’s preferred communication style. Staff were respectful of people’s wishes and supported them to make independent choices. Healthcare professionals provided positive feedback of a person-centred approach from the management and staff.
