Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. A relative told us, “The staff are dedicated, hardworking and kind, they look after [person] very well.”

We observed very positive interactions between staff and the people they supported. Staff we spoke with were all very enthusiastic about their work and spoke kindly and respectfully of the people they cared for. A staff member told us, “I love my work, really do, it’s so rewarding.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People’s records contained a very high level of person-centred detail including their likes and dislikes to guide staff in how best to support them. A relative told us “[Family member] has settled in well and gets on well with the other people living there. He is much happier than at his previous place, he has a laugh with everyone.”

The regular team of support staff knew people well and were able to anticipate their needs and support them in the most appropriate way. A member of staff told us, “We know them, what they like and not. The information is in the care plan and we also ask them what they want or need.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People were supported in a way that reflected their individual choice. A member of staff told us, “I always encourage residents to make their own choices and support them in their daily routines in a way that respects their preferences.”

When visiting people in their homes we observed staff giving choices about a variety of aspects of their day such as what and when to eat and how they wanted to spend their evening. A person told us, “If I am not ready to eat, they don’t force us to eat together."

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

We observed very positive interactions between people and the staff supporting them. A variety of communication methods were used to ensure people could express themselves and make their wishes and needs known to staff. There were plenty of staff on hand to meet people’s needs without delay.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

The provider had a number of initiatives to help support staff. Staff have the option to speak to an independent counsellor, and the provider uses an external Human Resources company who were able to provide benefits such as access to a portal to help staff to get a GP appointment more quickly.

The feedback we received from staff was all very positive about how well the provider supported them. A staff member told us how they had been supported to balance work with challenges in their personal life, “I can say I have received a high level of support (from the provider) and they have been very understanding.”
