During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our previous inspection on 14 May 2014 we identified shortfalls in training for staff relating to safeguarding both vulnerable adults and children. We also found that the clinic did not have regular staff meetings and they were not always minuted.

We were unable to review patient feedback and staff were unable to explain if there was a system in place to obtain feedback from patients and staff. During this inspection, we spoke to three staff including the manager.

On this visit, we found that all staff had undergone safeguarding training and were familiar with the protocol and the named safeguarding lead.

We viewed action plans, patient satisfaction surveys and team meeting minutes and found that the provider had taken action to rectify the problems identified at the previous inspection. Patient feedback had been reviewed and action had been taken where patients had made comments about the d'cor, tidiness and availability of leaflets.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to people and they told us that they were satisfied with the care they received. One person said, 'I would not be coming here if I didn't trust them. I have been coming here for over 25 years." Another said, "I have bad experiences with dentists in the past. However, this one is very good at what they do."

The provider had an ineffective system in place to manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people who use the service and others. Staff had limited knowledge about safeguarding and had not received any safeguarding training for both adults and children. The safeguarding policy in use did not contain details of the safeguarding leads. Staff were not aware if there was a safeguarding lead at the practice.

People who use the service understood the care and treatment choices available to them. People told us that the dentist always explained the choices available to them and that they did not feel pressured to make a choice. One person said, "They are very good at explaining exactly what work needs to be carried out, how much it costs and exactly how many treatments I would need." People said they were happy with the opening times and had enough information about what to do out of hours.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection.
