Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
People had choice and control over how their care and support was provided to meet their individual needs. One person told us, “I always led the care. I told them what I needed doing and how I liked it done. No question it was me who was in charge.” A relative said, “[Family member] decides how they want their wash. The carers don’t force anything at all, and they don’t rush [family member].”
Staff understood people’s rights to have choice and control over how their care and support was provided. A staff member told us, “I always offer people a choice on everything.”
Staff encouraged people to be as independent as possible as they regained confidence and ability to undertake the tasks of daily living. One person told us, “They stay here and watch and help. They let me do what I can, but they are watching and if I can’t do something then they will help me.” Another person said, “My carers really encouraged me. I wanted to get back to the gym but I know now that I can’t do that, but my carers showed me how to do things in an easier way to help me stay independent. They showed me how to use my frame properly.” A staff member told us, “Building people’s confidence is lovely. A lot of it is a lack of confidence so encouraging people to get this back again is important.”
