During an inspection looking at part of the service

The Lodge is a residential care home providing personal care to 54 people aged 65 and over, some of whom were living with a dementia. At the time of the inspection 37 people were living at the service. The home also offers a reablement service to people.

We found the following examples of good practice:

¿ All visitors had their temperature checked upon arrival at the service. Visitors were also asked to complete a questionnaire about their current health status. Visitors had access to relevant PPE. Protocols were in place to carry out lateral flow testing for any visitors to the service.

¿ Systems were in place to support people to maintain contact with their family. A visitor POD was available to support visiting relatives. People were also supported to main contact with their families via telephone or skype.

¿ Staff had access to adequate amounts of PPE. Staff had received infection prevention and control (IPC) training from the IPC nurse and the local authority. The registered manager had also received support from the IPC nurse following their visit to the service.

¿ The registered manager told us both people and staff underwent regular COVID-19 testing in line with government guidelines.

¿ Adjustments had been made to the majority of the environment and this was to support with social distancing. We identified one area where social distancing would have been a problem and the registered manager took immediate action to address the issue. Staff were seen to adhere to social distancing guidance during the inspection. Signage was displayed in communal areas to indicate to staff the maximum number of people allowed in these areas (to support social distancing).

¿ Robust cleaning protocols were in place for both daily and more in-depth cleaning. The registered manager completed monthly cleaning audits of the home. Where issues were identified, actions were noted and followed up for completion.

¿ The registered manager worked well with external professionals including the local authority commissioning team and the infection control nurse.

¿ Some minor issues were identified regarding the safe disposal of used PPE. The registered manager took immediate action to resolve this issue.
