Our current view of the service

We carried out this announced on-site inspection on 8 October 2025.

We found the practice had met regulations.

The practice had effective systems to identify and manage risks, including infection prevention and control.

Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.

Staff provided care and treatment in line with current guidance. They treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.

Duthie Dental, The Oral Health Practice is in Wavertree, Liverpool and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There was step-free access to the practice and car parking spaces available, including dedicated parking for disabled people, near the practice.

The practice had 6 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 46 staff, of which there were 8 dentists, 6 dental therapists, 4 dental hygienists, 16 qualified dental nurses, 4 trainee dental nurses, 3 receptionists, 3 managers and 2 support staff. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including 3 dentists, 1 dental nurse, 1 dental therapist, 2 managers.

People's experience of the service

On the day of our visit, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We received feedback from 15 patients. We also reviewed feedback from 341 patients which was collected by the practice from October 2024 to September 2025. Patient feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice.

Comments included:

“This is a fantastic family dental surgery all the staff are extremely professional and friendly, and I would have no hesitation in recommending this surgery to family and friends.”

“Always very happy with treatment and they're a wonderful team.”

Always a warm welcome into the surgery. Professional, up to date and individual service given every time. Highly recommend.”

“As someone who suffers with anxiety and worries about visiting the dentist, I am always made to feel comfortable and put at ease. Staff are lovely and kind. Everywhere is always kept to. I wouldn’t go to a different dentist!”

Patients commented positively about the standards of cleanliness. “Always made to feel welcome. Spotless clean and always put you at ease when anxious.” and “Lovely staff, clean and safe rooms. Very professional and caring.”

Patients felt able to book appointments within an acceptable timescale for their needs and said they had enough time during their appointment without feeling rushed. “As always, I was warmly welcomed by reception at my recent visit to Duthie Dental. [Staff member name] and [staff member name] also conducted my treatment very personably but professionally as usual. My next two appointments were arranged immediately and ensured they were convenient times for me.”

Patients told us they were given clear information to help them make an informed choice about their treatment and any associated costs. They were involved in decisions about their care. “Quick appointment for toothache, benefits and risks explained, tough extraction, future plan for care, good and simple post extraction literature.”

Patients told us that they were supported to maintain their oral health and were provided with appropriate information and resources. “Always treated well by both the dentist and hygienist. Reception staff very helpful. My needs are always met and constructive advice given as to future dental care.”

Patients said when they were prescribed medicines, sufficient information was given.

The practice shared patient feedback with the team. We were told this was reviewed and where suggestions had been made, appropriate action would be taken.
