Equity in access

Regulations met

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had an action plan to continually improve access for patients.

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to support patients to access the service. The practice had step-free access, a ground floor treatment room and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. A hearing induction loop was available to support patients with hearing impairment. Staff could also provide electronic devices with text-enlarging facilities to enable patients to read and sign important information independently where possible. Staff could also access language translation services where required. We highlighted that the emergency pull cord in the accessible toilet was not in place, the practice manager confirmed this would be addressed.

Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care and this was reflected in the patient feedback.

The practice supported more vulnerable members of society, for example, patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability.

The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on their website, patient information leaflet and social media page.

The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open.

At the time of our inspection, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. When the practice was unable to offer an urgent appointment, they worked with partner organisations to support urgent access for patients.

The practice worked with local organisations to improve access to dental care for vulnerable people, including people experiencing homelessness. Staff described how they supported patients to register with the practice, worked alongside a mobile dental service to facilitate ongoing treatment where required, and could access charitable funding to support patients who were not eligible for NHS dental care due to their circumstances.
