During an assessment under our new approach

Date of assessment: 01 December to 11 December 2025. The service is a residential care home providing personal care and support to older people, some of whom have a physical disability, a sensory impairment or dementia. Cantley Grange can accommodate up to 40 people. At the time of our assessment, 37 people were living at the service. We carried out an unannounced assessment of the service due to concerns being raised to us around cleanliness, a lack of food and fluid monitoring and that there was insufficient social stimulation for people. These concerns therefore required further on-site investigation. At our last assessment, we rated the service ‘good.’ At this assessment, the rating has remained ‘good.’

We found the service was working with external professionals to maintain good infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. The service now had a full domestic team in place and staff had good knowledge on effective IPC measures. We also found the facilities and equipment met the needs of people, health and safety checks and environmental risk assessments were carried out to help maintain a safe environment for people.

People were treated with kindness and compassion. The service had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns, which the registered manager investigated effectively. People were protected and kept safe from harm. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent.

During the assessment, we did identify some concerns regarding the effective recording of some people’s decision making, in relation to the Mental Capacity Act (MCA). This was feedback to leaders as an area of improvement.

People had support plans and risk assessments in place which often ensured risk was managed and mitigated. However, for 1 person, we found risk relating to medicines required improvement. Medicines were generally managed well. Although, we identified areas where improvements were required to records to ensure safe consistent care was provided. We did not find these shortfalls had impacted on people's care.

During a routine inspection

About the service

Cantley Grange is a residential care home providing personal care for up to 40 people. Some people using the service were living with dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 31 people living at the home.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

Staff ensured people’s needs were met in a timely and safe way. People and relatives told us they felt safe living at the home. Staff were aware of the safeguarding protocols and knew what action to take to keep people safe. Accidents and incidents were effectively monitored, which ensured staff learned when things went wrong. Risks to people were identified and detailed assessments were in place, to ensure risks were managed safely.

People were protected by the prevention and control of infection, although we identified some issues at site visit. However, an action plan was swiftly put in place to address these minor concerns.

Medication systems were in place and followed by staff to ensure people received their medicines as prescribed.

Staff interacted well with people and they provided care which was person-centred and individualised. Staff had received training to ensure they had the knowledge they required to carry out their role effectively.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. People had access to health care professionals. Staff worked with other professionals to ensure people's needs were met.

People told us staff were kind and caring. Relatives were positive about the care and support provided. Staff understood people’s needs and told us how they respected people’s dignity.

People felt they could speak with staff and the management team if they had any concerns.

There was an effective quality monitoring system in place which identified improvements and addressed them in a timely way.

Rating at last inspection

This service was registered with us on 10/10/2018 and this is the first rated inspection.

The last rating for the service under the previous provider was good (published on 6 December 2019).

Why we inspected

The service had not received a rating since registration, and we needed to ensure the service was safely operating.

We looked at infection prevention and control measures under the Safe key question. We look at this in all care home inspections even if no concerns or risks have been identified. This is to provide assurance that the service can respond to COVID-19 and other infection outbreaks effectively.

Follow up

We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service until we return to visit as per our re-inspection programme. If we receive any concerning information we may inspect sooner.

Rating at last inspection

This service was registered with us on 10/10/2018 and this is the first inspection.

The last rating for the service under the previous provider was good (published on 6 December 2019).

Why we inspected

The service had not received an inspection since registration, and we needed to ensure the service was safe. As a result, we undertook a focused inspection to review the key questions of safe and well-led only.

Additionally, the inspection looked at the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practices the provider has in place. This is because, as part of CQC’s response to care homes with outbreaks of coronavirus, we are conducting reviews to ensure the IPC practice was safe, and the service was compliant with IPC measures.

We reviewed the information we held about the service. We did not inspect other key questions as no areas of concern were identified in them.
