We undertook an assessment of Deepdene Care Centre between 19 February to 28 February 2025. We visited the service on 19 and 24 February 2025. Deepdene Care Centre is a nursing home providing accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care. It is registered for 65 people. At the time of our visit there were 62 people using the service.
The inspection was prompted in part by notification of an incident whereby a person sustained a serious injury. This incident is subject to further investigation by CQC as to whether any regulatory action should be taken. As a result, this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident. However, the information about the incident indicated potential concerns about the management of anxiety and confusion in people which could lead to harm of others. This inspection examined those risks.
We found breaches of legal regulations in relation to risk management, medicines management and governance.
Processes to ensure risks to people were assessed and mitigated were not always effective as there had been a serious incident whereby a person was harmed. We found some shortfalls in the management of medicines. Although most people told us the staff were caring, some reported their needs were not always met in a timely manner, leaving them uncomfortable. We observed poor care practices during lunch in one of the units. The provider’s monitoring systems had not always been effective as they had failed to identify and address the concerns we found during our inspection.
There were systems to protect people from the risk of infection and cross contamination and staff followed good practice. The home was clean and well-maintained. There were systems in place for the safe recruitment of staff. People and their relatives were involved in their pre-admission assessment, care planning and the management of individual risks. Staff received regular training spoke favourably of the management team.
