28 January 2022

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Willow Rose Care Home is a residential care home that was providing personal and nursing care to 46 people, some living with dementia, at the time of the inspection. The service can support up to 73 people across three separate units.

At the time of this inspection, we did not look at the whole service, we solely inspected the areas that had been identified for the designated setting, to accommodate four people. No people were living in this area of the home at the time of inspection.

We found the following examples of good practice.

People admitted to the unit, identified for the designated setting, would be able to self-isolate in line with current guidance.

People would be supported by a cohort of staff who would work solely on the self-contained unit during their shift.

People who had tested positive for Covid-19 could access the home through a separate entrance.

The cohort of staff assigned to the designated setting could access and exit the home through a separate entrance.

People would be supported to communicate with their relatives through window visits, telephone and video calls and there were processes in place to accommodate visits should the need arise.

People had access to their own individual full en-suite facilities which reduced the risk of transmission of infection.

People would be supported by staff wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in line with current guidance and fully trained in infection prevention and control.

Infection prevention and control audit checks have been reviewed and put in place to make sure any shortfalls would be identified promptly and quickly addressed.

Risk assessments identified staff who were disproportionately at risk of Covid-19 and appropriate action taken to maintain their safety.

We were assured that this service met good infection prevention and control guidelines as a designated care setting

About the service

Willow Rose Care Home is a residential care home, at the time of inspection they were providing personal and nursing care to 51 people aged 65 and over. The service can support up to 73 people.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

People’s needs were assessed prior to moving into the home. One person had religious and cultural needs, but it was not clearly documented how they wanted to be supported. Mealtimes were arranged to suit people's individual needs and their nutrition and hydration needs were met. People were able to make their own decisions.

We were somewhat assured that the provider was using PPE effectively and safely. We observed some occasions where staff were wearing masks below their nose. We were assured by all other areas of the home’s infection prevention control practices in relation to the prevention of COVID-19.

People and their relatives told us they felt safe. Medicines were managed safely. Care plans and risk assessments identified people’s needs and how to support them to stay safe.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

Staff treated people with kindness and compassion. People and their relatives felt well supported and listened to. Staff supported and encouraged people to be independent.

People received dignified end of life care. People were offered a range of activities and there was an activity team who planned and arranged events. People were supported to maintain contact with their loved ones.

Staff felt supported by the management team and said they enjoyed their jobs. People and their relatives expressed confidence in the management team. Numerous relatives told us they would recommend the home to others. Staff communicated with health professionals when required.

Rating at last inspection

This service was registered with us on 28 November 2019 and this is the first inspection.

Why we inspected

This was a planned inspection.

We looked at infection prevention and control measures under the Safe key question. We look at this in all care home inspections even if no concerns or risks have been identified. This is to provide assurance that the service can respond to COVID-19 and other infection outbreaks effectively.

Follow up

We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service until we return to visit as per our re-inspection programme. If we receive any concerning information we may inspect sooner.
