During an assessment under our new approach
Date of assessment: 2 and 3 July 2025. Virginia Lodge Care Home is a residential care home providing personal care to up to 32 people. The service provides support to older people including those who may be living with a dementia and/or a physical disability. At the time of our inspection there were 20 people using the service.
At this assessment we found people received safe, effective, compassionate care from staff and leaders that had worked hard to maintain standards.
People’s needs and risks were assessed before they began using the service and were regularly reviewed. Records contained person-centred detail regarding how to reduce risks. Where these could be improved the provider was receptive to feedback.
People interacted warmly with staff, who reciprocated and showed affection. Staff respected and valued the people they supported. They worked hard to maintain people’s safety and dignity.
There were not always sufficient suitably trained and experienced staff to ensure all people’s needs could be met without delay. People and relatives confirmed they were safe but that at time they had to wait for staff support.
Staff were knowledgeable about people’s needs and the risks they faced. They helped people move around the home safely, demonstrating patience and understanding.
Leadership arrangements were effective, with the addition of a deputy manager supporting the leadership team. They maintained oversight of electronic record keeping and ongoing liaison with external professionals. Audits had not always been utilised to their full effect to identify trends and patterns. The provider was responsive to this feedback. The culture was orientated around respect for people who used the service and making them as comfortable as possible.
