Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

 

This is the first assessment for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated good.

 

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

 

Staff supported people with kindness and dignity, and treated people with respect. People told us staff knew them very well, and they valued having trusting relationships with staff who were very caring, understanding and compassionate.

Staff consistency over several years aided the development of relationships, meaning staff knew people well.

One relative told us the care was “brilliant” and they knew their relative was happy and got on well with staff.

People’s care plans and daily notes were written in a respectful and person-centred way, promoting dignified, compassionate care which reflected people’s individual wishes, preferences and values.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

 

People’s individual needs and preferences were understood by staff, and these were reflected in the care, treatment and support people received. People were supported to spend their time as they wished.

People’s personal, cultural, religious and social needs were understood and met, and these were reflected in their care plans.

People told us they felt they were treated as individuals, had a mutual respect with staff, and told us they did not have to wait for care and support.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

 

People told us they could enjoy the things they like, when they liked, and had no restrictions placed on them or their care. Independence in decision making was supported and promoted by staff. People had control over day-to-day decisions and longer term decisions about their future.

People had as much control over their lives as possible, and staff listened to and respected their choices. For example, 1 person wrote the shopping list for their weekly food shop, so they could have the meals they wanted.

People were respected and supported to make their own choices about how they spent their time, promoting their independence, wellbeing and personal preferences including participating in activities they enjoyed.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise discomfort, concern or distress.

People and relatives told us staff were very responsive to people’s needs, and they did not have to wait for support. People’s needs, views, and wishes were a priority, and staff reacted quickly to them. One person told us because staff were consistent, staff knew them very well and could identify and act on changes in wellbeing quickly, including escalating concerns if necessary.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

 

Staff spoke positively about working for the service. They told us they felt well supported by an approachable and responsive management team who were always available to them, including out of hours.

The provider promoted staff wellbeing and provided an induction and regular supervision to staff, as well as informal ‘check ins’ with them.

The provider arranged an annual awards night at the end of the year to recognise and reward staff. This reflected a positive and supportive working environment in which staff felt valued.
