The Cedars Unit is a 47 bedded rehabilitation service for people whose General Practitioner (GP) is based in the borough of Kingston. Referrals to the Cedars Unit can be for people from home or from a local acute hospital. Care includes people requiring stroke rehabilitation, and short term care such as intravenous medication or blood transfusions.

We saw that this was a nurse led service with local GP's visiting every day. Several of the nurses were qualified prescribers of medication. The unit had recently closed 12 beds and on the day of our visit there were 35 beds divided into two units, one for male and one for female patients. Cedars unit works closely with the community therapy teams including physio, occupational and speech and language therapists. People were seen and treated on the unit and the same care could be extended into the community when a person was discharged. This gave a good continuity of care.

People we spoke with commented, 'I've just come in but so far so good', 'you're treated like a person here' and 'I'm pleasantly surprised, plenty of staff to help you, they are just waiting for what you need'. Others commented 'I would like to see the physiotherapist more often', another person said they were 'bored' and another 'I want to walk more but there's not enough staff to help you'.
