Background to this inspection

Updated 28 January 2016

The inspection was carried out on 12 November 2015 and was led by a CQC inspector. The team also included a dentist specialist advisor.

The methods that were used to collect information at the inspection included interviewing staff, observations and review of documents.

During the inspection we spoke with a dentist and a dental nurse. We reviewed policies, procedures, and other records relating to the management of the service. We reviewed 10 CQC comment cards that had been completed.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

  • Is it safe?

  • Is it effective?

  • Is it caring?

  • Is it responsive to people’s needs?

  • Is it well-led?

These questions therefore formed the framework for the areas we looked at during the inspection.

We received feedback from patients about the service via 10 CQC comment cards. Many of the patients had been with the practice for a number of years. All the comments were positive about the staff and the services provided. Comments included: first class service, staff are good and friendly and staff are very considerate and caring.

Our key findings were:

  • There was an effective complaints system.
  • Staff had received safeguarding training, knew how to recognise signs of abuse and how to report it.
  • There were sufficient numbers of suitably qualified staff to meet the needs of patients.
  • Staff had been trained to manage medical emergencies.

There was an area where the registered provider could make improvements and should:

•  ‘Clean’ and ‘dirty’ zones within the surgeries should be clearly defined in accordance with the best practice guidelines.
