Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider empowered people to have their say about things that were important to them. People were encouraged to maintain relationships. From our observation on day 1, at times there could be more meaningful activities.

People told us they wanted more meaningful activities. A person told us, “We have all been sat there this morning, it is so boring, and why do we have nothing at weekends.” On the first day of our assessment, we observed people sat in front of the TV and seeming withdrawn, however, on day 2, we observed a range of activities and people being supported to go out.

People and most relatives told us staff knew people’s likes and dislikes. A relative commented, “They all know, his quirky ways”, and a person told us, “The staff are all lovely, and they know me well and know what I need, and most of them treat me with respect.”

A staff member told us, “Everyone is individual here, but it is all person-centred care, and it is about knowing people really well.”
