Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 03 and 04 April 2025. Northcott House Residential Care and Nursing Home provides accommodation with nursing care for up to 59 people. Accommodation is arranged over two floors with stair and lift access. At the time of this inspection there were 56 people using the service. Our inspection took place to follow up on Warning Notices issued on 22 August 2024. The provider was previously in continued breach of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance.
Improvements were found at this assessment and the provider was no longer in breach of these regulations. At the last inspection the service was rated requires improvement. At this inspection the service is now rated good. We assessed 26 quality statements relating to 4 of the key questions. The scores for these have been combined with scores based on the last key question ratings.
Medicines were managed safely. Checks for safety had been carried out for the premises and for any equipment being used. Fire risks were assessed and managed. Quality assurance processes were in place to monitor all aspects of the service. Action plans were in place and actions taken following audits were monitored. Managers investigated incidents thoroughly and lessons learned were shared with staff.
Risk assessments had been completed and regularly reviewed, and care plans informed staff how to keep people safe from harm. Staff had the right skills, qualifications and experience to meet the needs of people and staff knew how to support people safely. Staff followed safeguarding processes and systems were effective to manage any safeguarding concerns.
People had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care for the best outcomes. They monitored people’s health to support healthy living. The service was clean, and we observed staff following infection prevention and control guidelines. Staff told us there was an open culture and they felt valued and respected. They spoke positively about the changes implemented by the new management team and told us they felt valued and listened to.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives spoke positively about the quality of care they received. People’s relatives told us they felt confident their relative was safe and spoke highly of the care their loved ones received. People and their relatives said the atmosphere at the service was welcoming and friendly and referred to staff as “loving” and “caring.” They told us staff knew their loved ones by name and provided the care and support needed. For example, one person’s relative said, “When I go home, I know [person] is safe and comfy and well looked after, so that is a weight off my mind.”
People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected their privacy and dignity. They treated them as individuals and supported their preferences. People had choice in their care and were encouraged to maintain relationships with family and friends.
People’s relatives told us they were involved in care planning and many told us they had been provided with a copy of the care plan to read. People’s relatives told us they felt confident the staff were trained to carry out their roles. For example, one person’s relative said, “The staff are very well trained, we saw that when there was an incident when a resident fell and the staff were all over it in an instant, very quick, very professional.”
Overall, people’s relatives told us they had seen improvements to the service since the latest management changes. They told us they knew who the management team were and felt confident to raise any concerns.
