Caring
Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question Good. At this assessment the rating has remained Good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.
This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Kindness, compassion and dignity
The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.
People looked at ease with staff, who knew them well. People were positive about their care, for example, “It’s going very well. First class service. Comfort is to my liking.” Visitors spoke of the kindness and compassion shown by staff towards their relatives. One described staff as “A lovely bunch.” A staff member said, “I basically love my job – it is very family-orientated here, and I love finding out about all of the residents and their families.” Visitors also confirmed their relatives always looked well-presented and wore clean clothes, which supported people’s dignity. They said the laundry system worked well, so clothes rarely went missing and were carefully laundered.
The atmosphere in communal areas was calmer than on our previous inspection. People were more relaxed with each other. The new manager and all staff spoke positively about the people they supported and showed a commitment to their well-being.
A staff member said, “So of course our residents are very vulnerable, so we have to be very kind… so we make sure they are not lonely and always talk to them and listen to them and give them an environment like they are in a family, and we are in their home.”
Treating people as individuals
The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protectedcharacteristics.
People said they were happy with how staff treated them. People looked relaxed and at ease with staff, and generally with one another. Visitors praised the staff group for their approach and kindness. Some of the improvements to the environment had a noticeable positive effect on people living at the home. For example, people responded well to the new dining room and its décor. One wall was covered with a photographed scenic view which captured the imagination of several people living with dementia. As they ate their meal, they sat and discussed the scene in an animated manner. Staff became involved in the discussion, they did not correct people about how the scene had been created but instead instigated a new topic of conversation around travel and holidays which people actively enjoyed.
During our visit, people chose where to sit and were not restricted from moving around the home or going to their room. Staff interactions showed staff knew the people they supported well, which was demonstrated through their approach and their conversations with us.
