We carried out this announced, off-site inspection on 18 November 2025.
Where we carry out an off-site assessment, we undertake a detailed review of the practice risk assessments, policies, staff records and other relevant documents. We gather feedback from patients, staff and stakeholders (where relevant). We carry out a remote visual assessment of the premises and have discussions with staff.
We found the practice had met regulations.
The practice had effective systems to identify and manage risks, including infection prevention and control.
Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.
Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
Staff provided care and treatment in line with current guidance. They treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.
The Quay Dental Practice is part of Portman Dentex, a dental group provider. The practice is in Bideford in Devon and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.
On-street parking was available in the local area. Due to the Grade II listed status of the building, access to the practice was via steep stairs and patients requiring accessible facilities were directed to a nearby sister practice.
The practice had 5 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 22 staff. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including 2 dentists, 2 dental nurses and the practice manager. The practice manager from a sister practice, one of the group’s Safety and Quality Specialists and the group’s Safety and Quality Manager were also at the inspection supporting the team.
