Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 4

Beech House Surgery was exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

The surgery performed significantly better than the national average in the results of the 2025 National GP Patient Survey. This showed people felt they were listened to and that they were treated with kindness.

For example, 92.3% of respondents to the survey felt the healthcare professional at their last appointment was good at treating them with care and concern (as compared to a national average of 85.6%) and 82% of respondents felt that the healthcare professional they saw was good at considering their mental wellbeing (as compared to a national average of 74%).

Most respondents (94.1% of those surveyed) also stated that the healthcare professional they saw or spoke to at their last appointment was good at listening to them (compared to a national average of 86.9%). In addition, 96% of respondents stated that they found the reception and administrative team at the surgery helpful (as compared to a national average of 83%).

100% of respondents stated that during their last appointment they had confidence and trust in the healthcare professional they saw or spoke to (as compared to a national average of 92.5%)

‘Friends and Family Test’ feedback from patients over the last 12 months also reflected a high level of satisfaction with the surgery with most respondents rating the surgery as ‘good’ or ‘very good’.

This positivity was mirrored in feedback we received from patients during our assessment who described staff members as “extremely helpful,” “respectful, compassionate, and caring,” “lovely, friendly, and informative,” and “incredibly thorough.”

During our visit, we observed that measures were in place to maintain patients’ privacy, with all consultation and treatment rooms fitted with appropriate privacy curtains. Posters displayed in both the reception and treatment areas informed patients that chaperones were available if required. Chaperone training was mandatory for all staff, and everyone had completed it. GPs and staff who wished to act as chaperones had also undertaken additional training for the role.

Social prescribers, working through the PCN collaborated with the provider to support patients through holistic assessments. They offered a range of services and could explore support for patients’ mental wellbeing; help patients be healthier, more active, and socially connected; and assist patients to live well and more independently.

Specific examples of how social prescribers had helped patients were provided during our visit and in all of these examples, positive outcomes were noted.

In addition to the social prescribers working at the practice, Beech House Surgery also employed a care coordinator whose role it was to holistically support patients in the community, working with patients and their families/carers to help them access support and services that are most appropriate for their medical and social needs.
