Background to this inspection

Updated 1 November 2019

Cropredy Surgery is a GP dispensing practice located in Cropredy in rural north Oxfordshire and is in Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The practice provides general medical services to approximately 3,830 registered patients.

The patient population has recently increased by around 200 over the last two years due to a closure of a local branch surgery.

The practice population has a lower proportion of patients aged below 39 and a higher proportion of patients aged over 40 when compared to the national average. The prevalence of patients with a long standing health condition is 58% compared to the local CCG average of 50% and national average of 54%. This could result in an increased demand for GP services.

According to data from the Office for National Statistics, Oxfordshire has high levels of affluence, low incidence of substance misuse and severe mental health problems and low levels of deprivation.

Ethnicity based on demographics collected in the 2011 census shows the population of Cropredy and the surrounding area is predominantly White British.

The practice comprises of one lead GP and a salaried GP (one female and one male) who are supported by locum GPs. The nursing team consists of three practice nurses and two health care assistants.

The practice manager and a team of receptionists, administrative and secretarial staff undertake the day to day management and running of Cropredy Surgery. The dispensary team consists of a dispensary manager, two dispensers and a delivery driver.

All services are provided from:

Overall inspection

Good

Updated 1 November 2019

We carried out a comprehensive inspection at Cropredy Surgery on 27 September 2019. The provider was previously a partnership and became a single handed GP in September 2018. Therefore the practice registered as an individual with CQC and required an inspection within 12 months. The services, staff and patient population remain very similar to the previous provider. We have rated the service Good.

We based our judgement of the quality of care at this service on a combination of:

  • Information provided to us by the practice.
  • Information from our ongoing monitoring of data

Our key findings were:

  • There were systems to learn and improve from complaints and incidents.
  • The practice undertook quality improvement initiatives to ensure improvements to care were implemented where necessary.
  • Patients had timely access to care
  • Staff were caring and responsive to patients’ needs.
  • Patient feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

We found areas where the provider should consider improvements:

  • Complete the fire risk assessment action plan
  • Continue to identify and reduce exception reporting where this is out of line with national averages.
  • Review monitoring of staff training

Details of our findings and the evidence supporting our ratings are set out in the evidence tables.
