During an annual regulatory review

We reviewed the information available to us about Barnard Medical Group on 10 September 2019. We did not find evidence of significant changes to the quality of service being provided since the last inspection. As a result, we decided not to inspect the surgery at this time. We will continue to monitor this information about this service throughout the year and may inspect the surgery when we see evidence of potential changes.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection of the practice on 25 August 2015. Breaches of legal requirements were found. After the comprehensive inspection, the practice wrote to us to say what they would do to meet the legal requirements in relation to the breaches of regulation 19 (2) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

We undertook this focussed inspection on 9 March 2016 to check that they had followed their plan and to confirm that they now met the legal requirements. This inspection did not include a visit to the practice. This report covers our findings in relation to those requirements. Overall the practice is rated as Good. Specifically, following the focussed inspection we found the practice to be good for providing safe services.

Our key findings across all the areas we inspected were as follows:

  • Systems and processes were in place to keep people safe. The practice had taken steps to ensure risks to patients were assessed and well managed, specifically in relation to staff recruitment.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Barnard Medical Group on 25 August 2015. Overall the practice is rated as good.

Please note that when referring to information throughout this report, for example any reference to the Quality and Outcomes Framework data, this relates to the most recent information available to the CQC at that time.

Our key findings across all the areas we inspected were as follows:

  • Staff understood and fulfilled their responsibilities to raise concerns, and to report incidents and near misses. Information about safety was recorded, monitored, appropriately reviewed and addressed.
  • Risks to patients were assessed and well managed, with the exception of some relating to recruitment checks
  • Patients’ needs were assessed and care was planned and delivered following best practice guidance. Staff had received training appropriate to their roles and any further training needs had been identified and planned.

  • Patients said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they were involved in their care and decisions about their treatment.
  • Most patients we received feedback from told us they found it easy to make an appointment
  • The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs.
  • There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management. The practice proactively sought feedback from staff and patients, which it acted on.

However there were areas of practice where the provider needs to make improvements.

Importantly the provider must:

  • Ensure recruitment arrangements include all necessary employment checks for all staff.

In addition, the provider should:

  • Ensure information is available in the practice premises to help patients understand the complaints system.
  • Ensure the patient participation group is publicised within the practice.
