Letter from the Chief Inspector of General Practice

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Dr Mohan and Associates on 13 May 2015. Overall the practice is rated as good.

Specifically, we found the practice to be good for providing well-led, effective, caring, safe and responsive services. It was also good for providing services for the care provided to older people, people with long term conditions, families, children and young people, working age people (including those recently retired and students), people whose circumstances may make them vulnerable, and people experiencing poor mental health (including people with dementia).

Our key findings across all the areas we inspected were as follows:

  • Staff understood and fulfilled their responsibilities to raise concerns, and to report incidents and near misses. Information about safety was recorded, monitored, appropriately reviewed and addressed.
  • Risks to patients were assessed and well managed.
  • Patients’ needs were assessed and care was planned and delivered following best practice guidance. Staff had received training appropriate to their roles and any further training needs had been identified and planned.
  • Patients said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and that they were involved in their care and decisions about their treatment.
  • Information about services and how to complain was available and easy to understand.
  • The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs.
  • There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management. The practice proactively sought feedback from staff and patients, which it acted on.

There were areas of practice where the provider needs to make improvements.

Importantly the provider should:

  • .Ensure water safety through legionella testing
  • Ensure the practice business continuity plan is regularly reviewed and updated.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines. There were processes and procedures for ensuring that medicines were available and safe to use and they were followed.

People said treatment choices were explained to them and they were able to make choices. One person said "the doctors do listen and explain things in a way I understand." People said that they were treated with consideration and respect.

People's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual treatment plan. Comments included "I think they do a good service", "they're very efficient" and "they've done really well for me."

People said they felt safe and comfortable using the service and would speak to a member of staff if they were worried. One person said "I feel quite comfortable with all of the doctors." Staff had an understanding of their role with regards to identifying and responding to any concerns about abuse. People were not protected against the potential risks associated with the unsafe management of medicines. This was because the processes and procedures for ensuring that emergency medicines were available and safe to use were not always followed.

The provider had taken steps to provide care in an environment that was suitably designed and adequately maintained. People said they were happy with the design and layout of the building. Comments included "yeah, it's nice, it's bright and clean."

People who used the service were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on. One person said "I have completed a few surveys; the last one was before Christmas."
