Background to this inspection

Updated 17 September 2018

The Roborough Surgery is situated on the outskirts of the City of Plymouth. The practice provides a personal medical service to approximately 10,700 patients. The practice’s population is in the seventh decile for deprivation. The lower the decile, the more deprived an area is compared to the national average. The practice population ethnic profile is predominantly White British. There is a practice age distribution of male and female patients’ broadly equivalent to national average figures.

There is a team of seven GP partners, five female and two male and two GP Registrars (fully qualified doctors training to become GPs). The team are supported by a practice manager, two nurse practitioners, one trainee nurse practitioner, one practice nurse, two health care assistants, a phlebotomist (staff trained to take blood) and additional administrative and reception staff.

The practice is a member of the Drake Medical Alliance consisting of five practices throughout Plymouth. Through this alliance the practice also has access to the services of a paramedic and a pharmacist.

Patients using the practice also have access to community nurses and health visitors and other health care professionals who visit the practice on a regular basis.

The practice is open between 8am-6pm Monday to Friday. Extended hours are offered on a Saturday morning twice a month between 8am and 1.15pm. The practice offers a range of appointment types including book on the day, telephone consultations and advance appointments.

Outside of these times patients are directed to contact the out of hour’s service by using the NHS 111 number.

The practice has a Personal Medical Services (PMS) contract with NHS England.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Roborough Surgery on 21 August 2018 as part of our inspection programme.

At this inspection we found:

  • The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
  • We received information from Plymouth Health Watch on their survey carried out between January 2018 and June 2018 and 100% of patients were happy with the service.
