Brook House Surgery is located in converted premises at 98 Oakley Road, Southampton, SO16 4NZ.

The practice has an NHS General Medical Services contract to provide health services to approximately 5555 patients in and around the Shirley and Millbrook areas of Southampton. The practice covers a mainly urban population and has a higher than national average for males and females aged 25 to 50 years. The practice is placed as the third highest deprived practice area in Southampton for adults and children.

The practice has two GP partners both male and two female salaried GPs, there is also a male salaried GP. The practice has an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and a Nurse Practitioner. The practice has two practice nurses and two healthcare assistants. The practice has two practice nurses on the team, who provide a full range of nursing services relevant to general practice. They are also trained to undertake on-going care of patients with long term conditions such as asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure. They also have an interest in management of obesity, heart disease and baby immunisations.

The clinical team are supported by a practice manager and a team of receptionists and administration support staff.

The practice has opted out of providing out-of-hours services to their own patients and refers them to the Out of Hours service via the NHS 111 service.

The provider is registered with CQC to deliver the Regulated Activities; diagnostic and screening procedures, maternity and midwifery services and treatment of disease, disorder or injury.

Since our last inspection Brook House has begun working together with another local GP practice, Raymond Road, Shirley. The two practices now have the same partners and were bringing administrative and IT back office functions together to provide a comprehensive support service.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Brook House Surgery on 5 December 2018.

At this inspection we found:

  • The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

Ensure that the systems for managing and storing medicines with regards to fridge temperatures are recorded correctly.

Ensure that the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency alerts are acted on in a timely manner.

Continue to improve performance for long-term conditions.

Continue to improve uptake of cervical screening and identification of carers.

Improve the recorded minutes of Significant Event meetings.
