Equity in access

Score: 3

The service made sure people could access the care, support and treatment they needed when they needed it.

The service performed better than the national average in the results of the 2025 National GP Patient Survey. This showed people could access the service when they needed it in a way that suited their needs, such as by telephone, in person or through the service’s website. For example, 83% of respondents to the survey described their overall experience of contacting this service as being good, compared to a national average of 70%. The practice was operating a triage system, as part of our review we spent time with a GP going through the process. We saw how patients were clinically triaged and then signposted accordingly, whether this be for an on the day appointment, advice given through a text messaging system or a routine appointment. Patient requests were responded to quickly and efficiently. Data from the National GP Patient Survey reflected this, 98% of patients knew what the next step would be within 2 days of contacting their GP practice.

In response to feedback from people who used the service, staff had made changes to improve access. This included the service changing their clinic times to offer services such as cervical cancer screening to the first appointment available of the day and the last one on an evening to help the working population. Extended access appointments were also available on evenings and weekends.

All treatment rooms were available on the ground floor, and a ramp and automatic door had been fitted to the entrance to ensure ease of access to the service.

Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

Staff and leaders actively listened to information about people who were most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes. They tailored their care, support and treatment in response to this.

Staff treated people equally and without discrimination. Leaders proactively sought ways to address any barriers to improving people’s experience and worked with local services, including within the voluntary sector, to address any local health inequalities. For example, patients whose circumstances may make them vulnerable such as those with a learning disability or dementia were offered appointments at quieter times. The practice had also worked with a dementia support group to help with the layout and colour scheme of the practice.

Staff understood the importance of providing an inclusive approach to care and made adjustments to support equity in people’s experience and outcomes. The service was registered as an Armed Forces veteran friendly accredited practice.

Staff used systems to capture and review feedback from people who used the service, results from the NHS Friends and Family test and the National GP Patient Survey were both positive.

Staff followed processes to ensure people could register at the service, including those in vulnerable circumstances such as homeless people and Travellers.
