East Barnet Health Centre is located in Barnet, North London within the Barnet Clinical Commissioning Group. The practice holds a Primary Medical Services contract (an agreement between NHS England and general practices for delivering personal medical services). The practice provides a full range of enhanced services including childhood vaccination and immunisation scheme, extended hours access, facilitating timely diagnosis and support for people with dementia, influenza and pneumococcal immunisations, learning disabilities, risk profiling and case management, rotavirus and shingles immunisation and unplanned admissions.

The practice is registered with the Care Quality Commission to carry on the regulated activities of maternity and midwifery services, diagnostic and screening procedures, treatment of disease, disorder or injury and family planning.

The practice has a patient list size of 3,600 at the time of our inspection. The clinical team at the practice included one principal GP (male), one salaried GP (female) and two practice nurse (females). The practice had 18 members of non-clinical staff including the practice manager. The practice manager, practice nurses and administrative staff are all shared between the three practices located at East Barnet Health Centre.

The practices opening hours are Monday to Friday 8.00am to 6.30pm. Extended opening times are available every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Outside of these times cover is provided by an out of hours provider. Urgent appointments are available daily and GPs also complete telephone consultations for patients.

We carried out an announced comprehensive at East Barnet Health Centre as part of our inspection programme.

At this inspection we found:

That the provider had effective governance processes in place, risk was well managed and there was evidence of improvements to patient care.

  • The practice had clear systems to manage risk so safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported they were able to access care when they needed it.
  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.

We saw one example of outstanding practice:

  • The practice was working in collaboration with eight local practices, social services, mental health team, palliative care team, Age UK, a frailty nurse and a consultant geriatrician as a Care and Health Integrated Network (CHIN). The CHIN aims to reduce unplanned admissions and improve the care of its frail elderly population as well as patients on the palliative care register. The CHIN aims to increase the use of patient-specific care plans using the Co-Ordinate My Care (CMC) platform.
