Chilton Place Surgery, also known as the Ash surgery is a GP practice located in the village of Ash Kent. It provides care for approximately 4700 patients. The practice is in a rural area.
There are three GP partners, one male and two female. Since our last inspection, the practice has employed a new practice manager and an emergency care practitioner. There is a practice nurse (female) and a healthcare assistant (female), and two receptionist/healthcare assistants.
There are marginally fewer children (aged less than 5 years) and about a third more older people (aged over 64 years) in the practice population than in the national average population. Income deprivation is about two thirds the national average. Unemployment is about half the national average.
The practice has a general medical services contract with NHS England for delivering primary care services to local communities. The practice offers a full range of primary medical services. The practice is not a training practice.
The practice is open between 8am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday. Appointments with doctors are available from 8.10am to 11.30am and 3.30pm until 6pm. Appointments with the emergency care practitioner are available from 10am to 12noon and 3pm to 6pm. The practice nurse and healthcare assistant sessions are available from 8.20am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm onwards.
The practice collaborates with The Butchery and Market surgeries to provide access to urgent appointments, one Saturday every four weeks, from 9am to 12pm on Saturday at Chilton Place Surgery.
The practice has opted out of providing out-of-hours services to their own patients. This is provided by Integrated Care 24. There is information, on the practice building and website, for patients on how to access the out of hours service when the practice is closed.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection of Chilton Place Surgery on 6 March 2018. The service required improvement for safe and well-led services. We carried out an announced focused comprehensive inspection on 27 November 2018 to confirm that the practice had carried out their plan to meet the legal requirements in relation to the breaches in regulations that we identified in our previous inspection on 6 March 2018. This report covers our findings in relation to those requirements and also, additional improvements made since our last inspection.
At this inspection we found:
- The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
- The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
- Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
- Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
- There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
