Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 4

The service was exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and in how they respected people’s privacy and dignity. Staff always treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

The service had arrangements to promote people’s privacy. Chaperones were available when required, with posters displayed throughout the practice and staff appropriately trained. The service performed significantly better than the national average in the results of the 2025 National GP Patient Survey. For example, 99% of patients said they felt the healthcare professional they saw or spoke to was good at listening to them during their last general practice appointment, compared to the national average of 86%. The survey also showed that 98% of patients said the reception and administrative team at the practice were helpful. This was significantly higher than the national average of 83%. Data from the NHS Friends and Family test also reflected this. From January to June this year 409 out of 415 patients had responded either very good or good to the question “Thinking about our GP practice, overall, how was your experience of our service?” Staff attitude was praised within the Friends and Family responses with patients consistently describing staff as friendly, caring and compassionate. The practice had received positive feedback for a sustained period of time since our previous assessment in 2016.

The practice had a highly active Patient Participation Group (PPG) that supported a range of initiatives to benefit patients, for example they were involved in communicating and gathering feedback on trialling the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to capture consultation notes. Feedback we received from the PPG was equally positive as the Friends and Family test and National GP Patient survey; they told us they felt very fortunate to be a part of the practice. They told us how the practice management was looking at issues that were a concern for local residents, this included planning for future healthcare provisions due to uncertainty over the future of the local hospital. Following feedback from the PPG a display of staff pictures was created in the waiting room so patients could recognise the staff members they were talking with.

There was a positive culture throughout the practice. Staff consistently demonstrated high levels of kindness, compassion, and dignity in their interactions with one another, treating colleagues with respect and understanding at all times. There was a strong culture of mutual support, where team members actively listened, valued each other's contributions, and promoted a positive and inclusive working environment.
